I'm still a bit confused about the garden. I've been up there for Independence Day and now I'm debating whether or not I should pay the fee for garden access for my next visit. The thing is, the garden is lovely, but I very much prefer the Manderley (esp. in terms of getting in the right mood for the show). Would I be missing out on anything substantial if I just buy a regular ticket? Given that I've already been up there, am I missing any part of the experience by entering the normal way?

In my humble opinion, if you have seen the garden, there is no need to pay for the $20 preview mark-up just to see the garden again. especially because the drinks are so expensive— although the $20 does apply toward that total, so there’s that.
However, if you are able to get the 6:00 (6:30 on weekends) entrance which, as I understand it, is the only way to get the rooftop alternate entrance into the show, do it! At least once. (EDIT: I SWITCHED THE TIMES BY MISTAKE— IT’S 6:30 ON WEEKNIGHTS AND 6:00 PM ON WEEKENDS.)
I was at the Independence Day celebration as well. Fantastic garden experience. I went to the 1st day of Garden entries into the show last monday and am really glad I did that. NOW they have this new $20 Garden preview add-on. I will not be doing that on my next visit (this coming Monday) because I want to go back to my usual entrance through the Manderley. Like you, I find that routine comforting and I missed it before the show.
But I must emphasize, the new entrance for the show through the rooftop IS ABSOLUTELY A MUST SEE! I will most definitely go back that way at some point. I want to experience it again now that I know what is coming so I can pay closer attention.
It is a bit confusing, but, as I understand it, this new $20 garden preview is NOT the new show entry. That is reserved for the limited number of people who have that early entry time slot.
